Livingstone Island is a 5-8 minutes boat ride from the Royal Livingstone Hotel and is located in the middle of the Zambezi River, touching the lip of the Victoria Falls, where the water thunders down the 103m drop. Access to this unique Island is seasonal and depends entirely on the water level in the Zambezi River. All visits to the island are during the ‘low water’ season, which usually begins in mid July and goes through to the end of January. High water visits are not possible as the island is continuously covered in the spray/downpour from the Victoria Falls.
The trip includes a short guided tour of the island, viewing the Victoria Falls and a light snack depending on the time of the morning visits.
At certain times of the year, swimming in Devils pool is possible. This isn’t your ordinary swim in an infinity pool, but a daring dip on the very edge of the Victoria Falls. Brave swimmers will get to experience the ultimate thrill of peering over the brim of the largest curtain of falling water. Devil’s Pool is open during the drier months of the year, usually between mid August and mid January, when the Zambezi water levels are low enough for swimmers to take the plunge.
Three morning visits of one and a half hours each (giving about one hour fifteen minutes on the Island).
These visits include tea and coffee, soft drinks and light snacks.
The Elephant Café is built on a wooden deck on the Zambezi River, a 30-minute boat ride upriver from Victoria Falls. It sits in a place that is not only breathtaking, but it is also imbued with an energy of interconnectedness and calm.
Guests have the privilege of interacting with hand-reared elephants of varying ages before sitting down to eat their meal. The older elephants, like the bulls Bop, Danny and Madinda, were rescued from severe drought and culls decades ago, while others have assimilated from the wild, or were born into the herd. They are elephants that have grown up with safe human support using the “positive reinforcement method.” Being around them in close vicinity, discerning the rumble of their songs from deep within — sensing their wildness and enormity — touches something primal and very old within you. It’s an experience one will never forget.
The Elephant Cafe offers African fusion food with a fine dining menu, which changes according to the seasonal local and wild ingredients that are available at any given time. The menu is distinctive not only for its flavour and freshness but also for its colourful originality. Seldom will visitors have heard of, or tasted, the wild food found in the Zambezi Valley.
The “bush gourmet cuisine” is unique only to The Elephant Café. Many of the wild nuts, fruits and leaves we use are also much loved by elephants themselves!
*Excludes ZAWA National Park Fees which is currently USD10.00 for non Sun Int Guests
These daily tours are of Mukuni Village, home to the Leya people. Clients have the opportunity to learn more about this interesting culture while being shown around the village homes and Chief Mukuni’s Palace, as well as having the opportunity to try out their traditional food & beer. This is a real village with a population of 5000.
The Simonga Village is home to approximately 3000 inhabitants – a mixture of the Lozi and Tonga tribes.
The village was founded in 1958 and is situated approximately 20 kilometres from Livingstone Town. This village is quite unique as it one of only three in the entire country of Zambia that is ruled by a Headwoman, Inonge Imusho Samachila, who was chosen by the Royal Family to rule in 1970, following the death of her father, Imusho Samachila. Upon arrival, guests are escorted through the village by a local resident, where they are introduced to the daily activities of an African village.
