The keys to an outstanding game drive are experience, knowledge and a suitable vehicle. All game drives around the park are taken in open 4 wheel drive vehicles. These vehicles have been designed to ensure maximum visibility for all passengers. The game drives are led by a trained, experienced English speaking guide who will ensure that you get the most out of every safari you make.
The cosy bar area centres round a roaring log fire, opening onto a large decking area from where you can take in the setting sun over the Mkata plains below. Under the same thatch, the dining area enjoys widespread views through the lush trees, and overlooking the swimming pool.
Mikumi be accessed by road or air. By road from Dar es Salaam takes approximately 4 hours and is on tarmac all the way. Safari Air Link operates scheduled flights from Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar to Mikumi, continuing onto Ruaha National Park. From Ruaha there are also scheduled flights onto and the Northern Parks and also Katavi and Mahale to the west.
Vuma Hills Tented camp is perched above the trees stretching over the seemingly endless wilderness south west of Mikumi National Park. Not only is Mikumi a great place for 'getting your eye in' on game drives, but it is also a fantastically colourful place. The open grasslands stretching out before you change through the spectrum of orange and yellows throughout the day - a photographers paradise!
Regarding wildlife, the sightings at Mikumi include leopard, lion, lots of elephant, warthog, big herds of eland, buffalo, sometimes wild dog, plenty of smaller antelope.
At Vuma we like to be able to add those special touches that add the magic to your safari; from bush breakfasts to sundowners and picnic lunches in the bush. What better way to watch the sun go down than with a cool drink, overlooking the grunting hippos in a waterhole.
Udzungwa excursions
The Tanzanian landscape includes several small isolated mountain ranges. Each of these have a unique mixture of habitats and animal species and none more so than the Udzungwa Mountains National Park. Home to at least ten species of primate and several recently discovered species of bird, a rainforest trek here will be one you never forget.
The sixteen tents are comfortably furnished, so sleeping under canvas at Vuma is a far cry from the discomfort usually associated with camps. Complete with shaded wooden veranda at the front and en suite bathroom facilities at the back there is not much more to be asked for.
