The main tourist trump card of Hermanus status of the world capital of whales. Every year dozens of these huge mammals swim to Walker Bay to give birth to their young. It occurs from June to December. The whales come very close to the coast (without swimming only 15–20 m), and they can be freely observed from special viewing platforms on the coastal cliffs. At the moment when the whale comes closest to the shore, the special whale sentinel screams into a shout so that everyone can prepare for this exciting show. The World Nature Fund considers Hermanus one of the 12 best places in the world for whale watching: on some days more than 20 individuals can be observed simultaneously in the bay.
- Next to Hermanus is the village of Gaansbay.
