This occurs between July and December. The whales come very close to the shore (not swimming only 15-20 m), and they can be watched from special viewing platforms on the coastal cliffs. At the moment when the whale comes closest to the shore, a special "whale sentry" shouts into a megaphone so that everyone gets ready for this exciting spectacle. Hermanus is ranked by the World Wide Fund for Nature as one of the 12 best whale watching spots in the world, with more than 20 whale watching at the same time on some days. The cruise ticket is purchased locally depending on the weather. If there is a pitching, then you can watch from the shore, if you take binoculars, then there is a good chance of seeing the giants.
